MX meets off-road at tough WEC Fall Cross Country Championship in Wingham

Official press release from World Enduro Canada, August 26, 2010

The WEC Fall Cross Country Series kicked off this past August 22 nd with the Dirty Bikes XC in Wingham, Ontario. Riders were greeted by an impressive, totally new, privately owned motorcycle facility. Matt and the Dirty Bikes gang had obviously put in a great amount of work prepping the course. The site was used the day before as part of the Dirty Bikes Sprint Enduro Series. Much of the same course was used in the XC with a large Grand Prix style MX track and woods loop featuring some very technically challenging trail.

Before racing began, Champions from the Spring Series were announced and presented with their Championship plates.

The day started with another fantastic Pee Wee race on a separate course that featured long sweeping turns and gradual jumps. This was a perfect course for our consistent group of hardcore 50cc auto racers. Christian Wiesner took the lead off the start and kept that position to the checkers.

The Mini Junior and Senior divisions had a very difficult time with a couple of hills in the woods. The first lap claimed a couple of riders and stranded a few more until marshals cleared up and rerouted some lines. Winners were a bit different than normal in these divisions. In Senior, the remarkably fast Ryan Maenz was not present as he decided to bump up to the full size program and race Beginner so that left Mackenzie Holloway to convincingly trounce all comers. In Mini Junior, perennial winner Wolfgang Wiesner turned the clutch of his mighty DRZ into a lump of molten metal and had to push his bike half a kilometre on the last lap and settle for third leaving a very quick and consistent Tanner Charette to run away with the win on his TTR Yamaha.

The morning program was busy with a large field of riders averaging 18 laps of the short but very entertaining course. Spectators were happy with multiple easy access points to view their favourite riders. The Junior class had a great duel between the Honda of Cameron Laramie and the Yamaha of Carl Bottema. The lead switched back and forth a few times with Cameron being the one out front when it counted.

Vet Junior also saw a great battle between Jeff Klassen and Scott Rocher. It looked like Scott had it in the bag when Jeff put on a charge with a few laps remaining. Jeff took the win and Scott settled for an impressive second place. Scott says his Husky 250 four stroke was the bike to beat on that technical course, and we believe him!

The afternoon program saw a very typical Vet Master podium with Paul Andratis at the top of the class followed by Randy Zuest and Dave Nelson in Third. Jamie West edged out Steve Bond in the Intermediate class with these two riders being the only ones in their class to put in 14 laps on the longer afternoon course.

The Pro race started tight with Kevin Cockayne grabbing $100 cash by nailing the Wiesner Insurance Holeshot. After a couple of laps Chris Van Hove took the lead and just focused on making it bigger. It became entertaining to see how many Pros Chris could lap before the end of the race. He had everyone lapped except Adam Millson on the Machine Racing Yamaha. Millson entertained the crowd with some serious air on the MX portion of the course. There were a few huge leaps and even a heel clicker on one lap that got the kids screaming. Van Hove easily took the win followed by Millson and Cockayne. It was unfortunate that Wojo could not be there but he was busy abusing himself in Alberta at the extreme event “Xtinction”. A very notable finish just off the Pro podium was Greg Filer. This was Greg’s first race as a Pro after advancing from Intermediate in the Spring Series.

Wingham proved to be a great facility with great organization. Lets hope to see it on the schedule again soon!
